Budapest & Esztergom Holiday Guide

A gem in Central Europe, Budapest offers everything, say Vienna or Paris offers but at a fraction of the cost (1 Euro=310 Hungarian Forint).

A few photos of my Hungarian adventure and detailed spreadsheets to help plan a holiday.

14 metre tall Liberty monument on Gellert hill built to honour Soviet soldiers who liberated city from Nazis.

Buda Castle and Danube from Gellert Hill. Great views of the city from here - the hilly terrained Buda side to the west(left) of the river with its Gellert hill and Castle hill and the flatter Pest side with St Stephan's Basilica and the Parliament to the eastern side of the river.

Hungarian State Opera House - visit to Budapest wouldn't be complete without watching a performance or two here or in any of the many cultural centres in the city

The painted doom of the Hungarian State Opera House, Budapest - If the performance doesn't enthrall, the grandeur of the opera house will certainly do.

Danube Bend - a curve in the river near the city of Visegrad caused by a volcanic eruption 15 million years ago.  Said to be the most scenic stretch of the Danube (most definitely, at least in Hungary) which flows through 10 countries before flowing into the Black Sea.

Esztergom Basilica and castle from the bridge over Danube connecting Hungary and Slovakia

Esztergom Basilica in the lovely town of Esztergom in Hungary where Romans lived before Christ and where the 7 Magyar chieftains came together to form the Hungarian empire in 895AD. King Stephan, Hungary's first King was baptised and crowned here.

View from the top of the dome of the Esztergom Basilica in Hungary. The city of Esztergom, Danube river and Slovakian city of Sturovo on the other side of the river. The journey from Budapest to Esztergom traversing the Danube bend surrounded by mountains on either side and scattered fields of mustard awash with its yellow blossoms in spring.

The 11th century Esztergom castle in Hungary seen from the doom of the Basilica

Esztergom castle, Hungary - a few Kitchen and dining utensils on display or perhaps a modern interpretation of a medieval kitchen.
